Shawn Lelis: This is the first I heard of that! The last two years of US highschool (11 and 12) covers prep for the first 5 -10 weeks of college or university courses. This is Pre-Calc or CalcChemistryPhysicsCivicsEnglish Compsition and grammar. Now I am aware many UK universities have 3 year degrees (and, by the way, the US University system doesn't recognize these for certain fields of study, incuding Medicine and Engineering and Architecture -- in fact some US schools have 5 year BS programs in Architecture to meet accreditations standards). So, there is a difference. Not exactly sure to what extent. It might be that the UK "college" concept is a 2 year advanced course that satisfies 1 year of University studies, thus the 3 year university degrees are actually 4 year degrees done in 5 years.First year college/university studies in the US include core subjectsMath (Algebra-trig) for one yearCalculus for science majorsEnglish Grammar for one yearHistory and Political Science f! or 1 yearMajor studies for one or two classes in your majorThis is called lower divisionOn a University level it is often taught in 400-600 student auditoriumsOn a college level it is in 50 student classrooms. Now, there is a problem in America called patriotism and poltical correness or compromiseParents, as a rule, don't want their 16 or 17 year old to learn that Socialism or Communism might be a good way and that it's just being done wrong by those countries who do it.See, that's anti-American to teach a 17 year old the American way may not be the best and that there are viable alternatives. Now, 18 year olds are adults.Colleges are NOT always public institutions but most Private and the Public ones are no supported by property taxes but by tuitions and grants and some state funding. In high school your teachers says to 17 years that Communism, itself, is not a harmful system and the parents can probably get that teacher fired from school. In a college at 18, the school will! call the campus police and throw the parents off the grounds.! And there is ABSOLUTELY nothing a parent can do except turn off their kids money for college until he leaves that repulsive, Pro commie school. They aren't paying $35K a year to make their son or daughter a PinkoSee, this is a problem in American SchoolsYou can't question the Iraq warYou can't question the President, because half the parents are Pro Bush and they'll go to school and ask what kind of UnAmerican teachers they have thiere and make public fuss at the school board meetings and THESE PEOPLE can change the face of the school board in just two years.Elected officials like their $60,000 a year jobs sitting on school boards and doing nothing but talking in public forums.See Public AMERICA answers to AMERICANSThese are the people who once went to War with England over Tea TaxAnd we're watching the English system now face their waterloo with the Hajib issue for students and teachers. And when the Muslims get enough seats in Parliament and the Conservatives can't must a m! ajority to get Prime Minister without bringing in the Muslims, will be the day Hajibs become acceptable by law and your school system will start to change!...Show more
Catheryn Barringer: i dont know but i think they're still learning the same things just spread out more over a longer period of time and in ireland where i live its like that. we start primary school at four. secondary school at 12, then fourth year is optional so people graduate at 17 or 18 unless they leave school after the junior cert at age 15. then they go to college or university for four years. well it depends what you're studying but its usually four years and thats it so i suspect you do the same things but just over a longer period of time...Show more
Damion Oleksa: I've studied in uk me too. I take the sixth form in 2002 . I like the American school(high school)
Travis Colomb: Sounds like they are trying to unify the school systems worldwide so there is a standard. Personaly I don! 't think that the US school system should be the model for this.
! Shaunta Paap: Wow cool you are from the UK ? ME too :)Yes it is actually quite a fact that PRIMARY and SECONDARY education in the UK is better.. Its not because who teaches what.. But for social reasons because america is more materialistic and have all kids who live life for parties etc..I know its unfair on us :( but you cant just looks back on things in life like this. Oh well it happened, cant do nothing bout it. Make the most of college or where ever you go to :)...Show more
Leora Klingelhoets: you could have one to 6th form collage or any other collage. I disagree with making it compulsory stay in education until 18. Some children want to get an education, work hard and have a goo life. Collage is full of young people who want to be there and enjoy learning. If all children 16 to 18 have to stay in education, there will be lots of disruption for the kids who want to be there from the no hopers that just want to cause problems.
