should I get a second opinion on my car?

Misty Vagle: what exactly is wrong with it?

Myriam Hetjonk: Go to iatn.net and click on the center tab at the top. Then find an independent shop near you to get a second opinion. The shops that belong to this technician's network are real pros and run good shops. They're not chain store operations.

Coralie Goldsberry: Never go to the dealer with an old car. Find a local shop.

Lucien Hellerman: Hi Chris,Yes, you should never take an 'older' car to a 'dealership'...even an honest dealer (I know some owners here) will tell you that. They are FULL RETAIL pricing...designed more for "under warranty" repairs and service. At this time, you should look into something like a Pepboys or other 'chain' repair shop. (Chains just help you NOT get taken advantage of quite as much as some independent shops, but a lady with a car repair...opens up a lot of repair folks to think they can 'jack up' prices or needed services, sometimes.) Maybe have a male friend come with ! you? (Even if he doesn't know anything/much...it could help.)Another tip, ask what MUST be fixed...for it to run (sometimes they tell you things like you 'should' or 'really need to' fix something...that you'll actually be fine with for another 3 - 6 months or more...but REPAIR shops 'agents'...make commissions/more money from what they get you to spend...so, you MAY not NEED 'everything' they are quoting you.1) Ask if it ALL is needed NOW...to get it on the road.2) Take it to another shop, NON-dealer, so you'll pay less in general...3) Remember that shops exist to make money, not just there to help you, so they 'may' be 'suggesting' stuff that you don't need 'just yet'... (Shops know...usually a bit of implied fear and concern about a "XYZ-thing should really be fixed/replaced too"...gets women to buy new or repair stuff earlier than needed or not needed at all.)OH, if you post WHAT they say needs fixed, you may get better or more specific advice.***If they will 'take' the! car/truck in and pay you $1700 towards a newer vehicle...AND ! you can afford monthly payments...a newer vehicle might not be a bad option. There's another world of advice on that topic too, though.Best Wishes!...Show more
