Jasper Mangel: use an impact to tear it down but a torque wrench to assemble. about 200 ft lbs should be enough.
Serena Doak: I would be looking for the most torque that you can afford. You get what you pay for with impacts. I would say under $50 is a toy that is hardly worth having. $50-100 may actually have some use and last more than a few jobs. $100-200 now you are talking about a decent useful tool for the home mechanic. $200-300 you have a nice tool that should do most of what a home mechanic will run into and last a lifetime, this is also where the 'pro' tools start. $300+ is a pro quality tool.I started out with cheap models. When they were new they seemed to have about 1/2 the power they advertised and they wore out and lost power quickly. For air powered check out Aircat, I got one about a year ago and for the money its been a great tool. I have never found a reasonable priced and weight electric that seemed able to deal with things like rusty lu! g nuts and axle nuts. I have a friend that has a really old electric snap on that works great but it takes 2 guys to carry it and cost like $300 in 1965. Dont forget to look on places like Ebay and Craigs list for deals on both new and used ones. Also check out local pawn shops. The big pro brands usually sell rebuild kits even for their 30+ year old models so used is not a problem....Show more
Ronny Dorge: At least 150 foot pounds of torque.
Jackelyn Archut: Well to provide you with a little of my experiences...I use to use an impact gun when putting wheels back on. The problem...When I had a flat on the side of the road I had no impact gun to remove it. I know what you are thinking...just use the tire Iron to remove it. Well, the impact gun put to much torque on the lug nuts and I couldnt budge them at all. And I consider myself to be pretty strong. So to answer your question...Go with the torque wrench...you will have more accuracy and yes you can use ! it for other things as well. But only for torqueing nuts and b! olts. Dont use it for loosening or for snugging down. They are for torqueing only. That is their purpose. Good Luck!...Show more
Joel Feagler: most impact wrench's have about 175 to 200 pounds of torque. check the rating should be on the box.
Shelley Stevens: that all depends on whether you are looking for air powered or ac powered but either way 450 ft lbs should get you though most situations. Anything that requires more torque than that just get a $5 steel tube and a breaker bar you can get up to 5 feet safely and break those frozen nuts.
Barrett Felicia: It depends on what kind of car. If it is for multiple cars I'd get one that goes no higher than 200 ft lb. 200 ft lb would actuallly damage most bolts anyway. It's hard to get an actual torque with am impact wrench. It'd be benificial to buy an actual torque wrench and torque it to the manufactiors specs or what a hanes Manual says. A few extra turns if a ratchet never hurt anyone.
