Joie Kemmis: Definitely check out "Natasha's Dance: A Cultural History of Russia", by Orlando Figes. http://www.amazon.com/Natashas-Dance-Cultural-Hist...I received an advance promotional copy of this book before it was released in 2002 and despite have only a passing interest in the subject matter, completely devoured it within a week. Orlando Figes is a history professor at the University of London, and has published several books about Russian History. As far as I know, this is his most exhaustive. When it was released, the book received rave reviews from almost every established literary critic, and has always sold reasonably well on Amazon. The book pretty much starts off a few years before the War of 1812 and proceeds from there. It should tell you pretty much everything yo! u need to know to get a basic introduction to Russian history....Show more
